Max Beckmann Exhibit

21 May 2006

Stopped in at the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt to check out the Max Beckmann water color and pastel exhibit. I had seen many of his oils so this was great way to get a peek at the underlying technique!

Max Beckmann, (b. February 12, 1884 in Leipzig, Germany, d. December 28, 1950 in new York City), was a German painter, draftsman, graphic artist, sculptor, writer and thinker. He was associated with the Weimar artists and taught art in Frankfurt. Labeled by Hitler as one of the "degenerate" artists, he was stripped of his teaching
position and fled to Amsterdam before finally immigrating to the US 10 years later. He is usually classified as an Expressionist
artist, although during his lifetime he rejected both the term and the movement. In the 1920s he was associated with the New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit), an outgrowth of Expressionism that opposed its introverted emotionalism. - Wikopedia

Wish you'd been there!
